Terminology
PLASTELEC Tubes offers you a mini-dictionary to help you grasp the meaning of the various terms specific to plastic processing and in particular, the extrusion business. |

Below you will find a list of terms concerning our business:
SHEATHING - COVERING: Covering of elements (which may or may not be conductors) with various thermoplastic or elastomer materials, by pushing through a die with a given profile
PIPE: Hollow cylindrical section with a thick wall used to convey fluids
SHEATH: Hollow cylindrical section with a thin wall used to provide electrical or mechanical protection for one or more elements
PROFILE: Any section which is not cylindrical
STRING - CORD: solid cylindrical section
HOSE: Tube with external (metal or textile) braiding used to convey fluids under pressure
MULTITUBE: Bundle consisting of between 1 and 19 tubes assembled in spiral fashion and protected by a sheath
EXTRUSION: Processing of thermoplastic or elastomer material in order to obtain a product of a given section, by means of a tool (die), on a continuous basis.
DIELECTRIC STRENGTH: The ability of a material to withstand high voltages without perforation ("electric breakdown")
CREEP: Slow deformation of a material placed under prolonged stress
RELAXATION: Gradual disappearance of the stress in a body which has been subjected to limited but maintained and constant deformation
BUNCH: Set of mechanically associated filaments arranged in spiral fashion, in the same direction and with the same pitch
STRAND: Set of mechanically associated filaments arranged spiral fashion in one or more layers, with the two layers spiralling in opposite directions or with different pitches
CONDUCTOR: Central, metal part of a wire conducting the electric current; the conductor is said to be solid when it consists of a single filament, and stranded or bunched when it consists of several filaments forming one or more strands or bunches.
UTE: Union Technique de l'Electricité: French Electrical Technical Association
LCIE: French central laboratory for the Electrical Industries
